Happy Wednesday, Crafters! Hope you’re ready for a sewing tutorial, because here is the Valentine’s Day tutorial I promised from yesterday. enjoy!

how to make a ruffled towel

Just looking at this little lovely in my kitchen makes me smile….even though I’m not the biggest fan of cooking.

how to sew ruffles

A little Moda, a little ruffles, add in some polka dots and I’m swooning!

how to make a towel stay in place

I added a small, but rather important feature, on my towel so that it would have a chance of surviving the craziness of 2 small boys……a Towel Leash!

Ok, onto the tutorial.

How To Make a Towel Leash

supplies: towel, sew on velcro, ribbon {i used 7/8″  grosgrain tea towel with photo ribbon}, Fray Check, scissors, thread, sewing machine

how to sew a towel leash

  1. I used a white tea towel.
  2. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon to be 3.5″ long and fray check or singe the edges. Cut 2 small pieces of velcro and separate the hook and loop sides.
  3. Sew both hook sides of the velcro to the back side of the towel in one corner.
  4. Sew one side of the ribbon on the other edge of the towel {still on the wrong side of the towel}
  5. Sew the loop sides of the velcro onto the other side of the ribbon as shown.
  6. Then sew the ruffles {as directed below} to the right side of the towel so that the velcro and leash are hidden in the middle of the towel.

How to Sew a Ruffled Hand Towel

supplies: towel {mine is 14.5″x29″}, 1/4 yard of 4 fabrics, 1/2″ ribbon, fray check, iron, sewing machine, thread, pins

diy ruffle towel

  1. Cut your fabric into 5″x44″ and iron in half {so that it measures 2.5″x44″}
  2. With your, sew ruffles with the 6 stitches to 1 ruffle setting along the raw edges. {don’t finish the small sides just yet}
  3. Place your ruffle strip over your towel and measure an extra 1/2″ on each side and then trim off the excess. Then fold over 1/4″ on the 2.5″ side and iron. Then fold over another 1/4″ iron and iron. Then top stitch. Do this to both sides of each of the 4 ruffle strips.
  4. Pin the ruffled strips to the bottom of the towel on the right side.
  5. I sewed the ruffles on the opposite side of the hook velcro pieces.
  6. Sew the next ruffle strips 1.5 inches above the previous ruffles.
  7. After you’ve sewn  on all 4 ruffles, pin the ribbon in place {I used a 16.5″ piece of ribbon} to conceal the raw edges of the top ruffle. Sew the ribbon in place.
  8. Wrap the ends of the ribbon around to the back of the towel and sew to secure in place.

Put your towel on your stove and secure the Towel Leash in place and enjoy!

I love my pretty towel! I’m hoping to make more for other holidays. Wouldn’t that be fun? Great way to make a stove look glamorous, right?

Oh and wouldn’t they make great gifts?
